One of the more common faults we have as golfers is to always shoot at the flagstick, regardless of where it is on the green. Considering that Lee Trevino, the best player ever measured by Dave Pelz for Percentage Error Index (PEI), averaged missing his target by 5% on full swings, it is unrealistic to assume that we can even average 10% PEI. Therefore, when selecting your target, be aware of your PEI and aim to ensure the best results. Some guidelines you may use:
• Aim at the flagstick only when inside 100 yards • Between 100-150 yards, aim at the center of the green • Outside 150 yards, aim to insure that if you miss the green, you miss it in the easiest place from which to make par
The only way this strategy will work is if you have a good short game, so practice hard on your short shots within 50 yards of the green.
