MacGregor Golf, one of the ore storied names in golf and a company once owned by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, is making another comeback. This time it's golf retail giant Golfsmith International (NASDAQ: GOLF) that owns the 100-plus-yea-old brand. Golfsmith acquired full intellectual property rights to the MacGregor Golf brand this past last May. The company has not specifically said whether or not MacGregor will be a store brand, but has said that MacGregor will "stand alongside all major golf brands within Golfsmith’s overall merchandising mix.'' Perhaps a bit surprising is the fact that the suggested retail prices of the new MacGregor products - $799.99 for VIP irons for example - aren't a bit less but it shows the confidence Golfsmith has in the brand. It's good to see MacGregor back, especially with the classic forged VIP irons, but how many consumers will remember the brand remains to the seen. MacGregor Golf is introducing a new, revamped lineup of premium golf equipment that builds upon the brand’s rich history and reputation of helping golfers play better. MacGregor’s new product line includes drivers, irons, wedges, putters and accessories.
“We are leveraging 113 years of history and 59 major tournament wins to re-introduce golfers to the MacGregor brand,” said Marty Hanaka, President and CEO of Golfsmith. “Acquiring the MacGregor Golf brand was an easy decision because it’s a brand that resonates with golfers and has a rich history and worldwide notoriety. We’re proud to bring MacGregor Golf back to life with an exciting new lineup of products.”
In addition to the VIP irons, the new MacGregor lineup includes the M85T driver (suggested retail price $299.99) that features the brand's familiar Cup Face 360 and Face Fit technologies as well as a game improvement M75T Driver ($199.99); game improvement M85i irons ($699.99); and ROTA milled putters ($129.99).
