Why Are You Are Making a Change?

If you are looking to improve your golf game, you are probably changing something in your set up or swing in order to help you do it. After all, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got! If we want something different to happen, we need to do something different.

When making changes, it is important to have a solid understanding of exactly why you are making those changes. If you know why, you will be more committed to making the changes over time that will be needed to help you reach a higher level of play. If you don’t know why you are making a setup or swing change, you will be much less likely to put up with the initial discomfort of the change and more likely to abandon it before it can habituate. This leaves you right back where you started.

Sound golf instruction will ask that you do something different in the key areas that are limiting your improvement. Since we are all unique individuals, we will typically need to change things that are different than what many other golfers may need to change. These changes should have a direct influence on your ability to hit solid, accurate golf shots. Ask yourself, “Why am I making a change? How, specifically, will this change enable me to hit more solid, accurate golf shots?” An answer such as, “It will make me more consistent” is not specific enough. If you cannot answer those two questions, you may be changing something that does not need changing or, worse yet, be changing something that is already a strength.
