Why can’t I get better?

Every golfer likes to get better and there are many reasons that may prevent a golfer from improving. According to the United States Golf Association, golfers are hitting the ball further but scores are not improving. The National Golf Foundation sites one of the main reasons for golfers leaving the game is difficulty hitting the golf ball consistently. For the beginner to average player, nutrition and exercise will not play a major role in golf improvement. To address the lack of lower scores and consistency, golfers need to focus on proper instruction in combination with properly fitted equipment.

This article is to help educate you on properly fitted equipment. As a master teaching professional I have the opportunity to help students of all levels improve their golf games with great joy. The success my students have come from understanding their athletic ability and having equipment that is properly fitted to their games and swing.

When I interview golfers, prior to taking a lesson, most will tell me that their equipment was a gift, belonged to someone else and was given to them, or they purchased the clubs without being fitted. They will also make comments such as “Why can’t I get better?” This is one of many comments I hear during my first meeting with my students. Below is a list of comments that would indicate that your equipment needs to be evaluated. If this sounds like you, consider having your equipment evaluated by a professional.

“My body feels sore after I practice or play”
“My elbow hurts the next day”
“I am always off balance in my swing”
    “These clubs feel too heavy”
    “I always slice the ball”
“I feel like I’m bent over too much”
“I hit my irons great and driver bad”
“I hit my woods great but irons badly”
“I never hit the ball the same way every time”
    “I can’t hit my wedges”
“If I could putt I would be great”
“This club sounds funny when I hit it”
    “My divots are toe deep”

In all my years teaching and fitting, I have never had one student tell me they got worse after they were fitted. On the contrary, they tell me they saved money on golf balls because they didn’t lose them as frequent, can focus on short game and course management now that they are happy with their full swing, shot their lowest scores ever, felt confident, and wished they had got fitted sooner.
